Kannada Superstar Vishnuvardhan Died

Kannada film industry's super star Vishnuvardhan died of severe heart attack at the age of 60 years in Mysore on Wednesday early morning. He died on his way to Vikram Hospital in Mysore from Metro Polo Hotel. On Wednesday (30th December 2009) early morning around 2.30 am Dr Vishnuvardhan complained of chest pain. Dr.Vishnuvardhan is next to Dr.Rajakumar in popularity in Karnataka.

Vishnuvardhan has acted in 200 films in Kannada and richly popular for his friendly nature and good deeds. After the death of Dr Rajakumar on April 12 2006 the passing away of Dr.Vishnuvardhan after three years eight and half months is a huge loss to Kannada cinema industry.

A son’s attempt to know about the life and love of his father, that is Pokkisham. It begins with the son being asked by his mother to find some old document in the house. He finds it for her, but while rummaging through various sheaves of papers and books that have been gathering dust for years now, he comes across an old diary, one that belonged to his father. Naturally, he starts reading the jottings of his father. The diary has a lot about the love of his father’s life. But, unfortunately, the son finds out that the diary is not complete, a few pages are missing. But, he has gone too far into the life of his father to be able to stop without finding out the entire story and what happened. He takes the easiest way out by asking his mother about what happened. His mother narrates an unusual love story to him. That in short is Pokkisham.

Ajith will be featuring in a film to be funded by the Catholic Archdiocese of Chennai, Mylapore, on St. Thomas. This 50 crore project will be launched this evening (03.07.08) at St.Thomas Cathedral, Santhome under the auspices of Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Karunanidi.

While disclosing details about the film, Dr.Paulraj Lourdusamy, chief researcher and script writer of the film said that St.Thomas will be a multilingual film made in many Indian languages. Currently, they are searching for faces with divine aura. He also mentioned that on a chance meeting with Ajith and Shalini, he had asked them if they would be willing to act in the film to which the star couple had given their consent. The film will go on floors from January in many locales in Kerala.

The performance of Dasavatharam is very impressive not only in the domestic market but also in the overseas segment. As per the Malaysian Box office collections report for the period June 12 to 15, the films stands in second position having grossed $601,307, being screened at 58 theatres. At the first position is ‘The Incredible Hulk’.
In the United Kingdom, where generally Bollywood films rule the roost, Dasavatharam stands at 11th position having piped Ram Gopal Verma’s Sarkar Raj to 16th place in the period June13th to June 15th. The film has grossed $ 246,677. Though the film is being screened at a few theatres, it is reported to be doing well in terms of percentage collections.

Dasavatharam was screened for Chief Minister Karunanidhi and his family, few ministers and poet Vairamuthu and his family on 7th of June at Four Frames preview theatres, Chennai. There were a few Sachin Tendulkar fans during the 1999 World Cup who held the big banner that read ‘Cricket is our religion, Sachin is our God.’ The caption caught on quite well among Sachin fans worldwide and was seen for quite some time. Now what is this caption doing in the Dasavatharam preview? Well, the thought occurs if cinema was religion instead of cricket, then who would have been God? We know that some of Kamal’s fans refer to their Thalaivar as Aalwarpettai Aandavar and yes, if cinema was a religion, Padmasree Dr. Kamal Haasan would certainly be God.

You might feel that this might be premature elation considering that Dasavatharam is still a good three days away from theaters. But take a look at what has gone into the making of the movie and you will realize that just the effort and nothing else is worth celebrating.

One man doing 11 roles, 10 on screen and one off it (as scriptwriter) is a first in the history of world cinema. You have heard a lot about the story, probably more than what you have about any film before its release. A story that spans 9 centuries and takes you across the globe on a big adventure and on a canvas so big that Indian cinema, maybe world cinema, has never witnessed. Here’s a look at just how big Dasavatharam is.

Cast and technology

One Kamal Haasan in the cast is good enough to make a movie more than interesting, here we have 10 Kamals in one movie- the experience will be something special. Then there is Asin in the biggest role of her career. Yes, the young lady has already proved her mettle but this time she is rubbing shoulders with a legend in every sense of the word. Mallika Sherawath as the CIA agent, Napolean as Kulothunga Sozhan, Jayapradha and others.

Everything associated with the movie has been given extraordinary care and no one but the best in the world have been involved with the movie at each stage. Take for instance Andy Dixon, the world renowned stunt choreographer who has to his credit films like Transporter 2. He is the man behind the reportedly huge stunt sequences. Michael Westmore, who transformed Jim Carrey into The Mask, is the one who has handled the make up department. Six hours a day for Kamal is what was spent only on make up to get the right look for one of the characters and it was 4 hours for Napolean. The levels of perfection can only be imagined. The visual effects, too, had an expert from Hollywood handling matters: Brayn M Jennings, an Oscar nominee.

When there is history and mythology involved you never want to take chances because you never know who you might end up hurting, and some people derive acute pleasure by feeling that they have been hurt and create a lot of trouble. Dasavatharam did not want any of this and so brought in the top brains of the country in history from IIT, Tanjore University etc. and made sure that the script is foolproof.

There have also been reports that the movie includes a yet undisclosed clip of the 2004 Tsunami that was captured with a handycam by an individual in Indonesia.
The technicians are world-class but the man who coordinates them all, is the captain, the director-K.S.Ravikumar. He is the master of entertaining cinema, always hitting the right chord with audience. To put it simply, he is a genius who has his hand on the pulse of the people and that’s why his films rarely fail and when equipped with a Kamal script and provided with a team that is nothing less than the best in the world, he can work wonders.But who made this dream come true. The vision was Kamal’s, the execution was KSR’s and the team with him was fantastic, but without Aascar Ravichandran, things might have been a lot more difficult. Shooting in more than 10 locations in India, USA, Singapore etc., getting the best technicians in the world, having complete faith in the makers’ dream and warding off all troubles that keep coming when something so big is made, Aascar has been the perfect producer.
And, even when it comes to the release, Aascar is proving once again why it is one of the biggest names in South Indian cinema. 1000 prints overall, an overseas release that could give jitters to even a Hollywood film and publicity that no one can miss. India’s most respected film award, the 54th National Film Awards, has just announced the winners for 2006. (The awards had been horribly delayed because of some stay orders). Priyamani has once again done Tamil cinema proud by winning best actress for Paruthiveeran. Earlier she had won at the Osian’s festival as well. Responding to the honour,
the actress said, “I am elated, happy and speechless at the moment. It can’t get better than this. Muthazhagu has given me everything- Name, Fame, Awards, Recognition and above all box-office success.” The best Tamil film went to Vasanthabalan’s Veyil. Finally, Soumitra Chatterjee bagged best actor for the Bengali film, Podokhep. Unbelievably enough, this marvellous actor has never won a National Award for this category before! The best feature went to the Malayalam film Pulijanmam, directed by Priyanandanan. Once again, Madhur Bhandarkar bagged best director for Traffic Signal. Speaking to the media, an elated Bhandarkar quipped, “The National Award is the only big award for me. It’s an honour and I could not have asked for more," Predictably Lage Raho Munnabhai won for most popular film, while Kabul Express and Eakantham jointly took the Indira Gandhi prize for best first film of a director. The youngest director in the world, Kishan SS (who was nine when he made the film) won best children’s film for Care of Footpath. Vishal Bhardwaj was given a special jury award for Omkara, while Konkona Sen Sharma took best supporting actress for the same. Dilip Prabhavalkar won best supporting actor for LRM and for Shevri. Super star Kuselan insured 70 crores & Dasavatharam insured for 43 crores

Rajinikanth starrer Kuselan has been insured for Rs. 70 crores! Of this, the Tamil version has been insured for Rs. 40 crores and the Telugu version, Kuseladu, for Rs. 30 crores. The lead stars, Rajini, Pasupathy, Nayanthara, Meena and over 200 technicians involved in the project have been included in the insurance scheme. The idea behind insuring the film is
to get over any losses that could be incurred by the producer due to accidents, natural disasters etc. As this insurance scheme involves huge amount, an Indian insurance company has tied up with a foreign company. Sources say that the foreign insurance company will profit up to 80 per cent from this venture.It may be recalled that Vikram’s Anniyan was the first Tamil film to be insured. It was insured for Rs. 27 crores. Kamal starrer Dasavatharan has also been insured for Rs. 43 crores. Sources close to Robot team say that plan are afoot to insure the film for a huge price. Yet another director from the Selvaraghavan stable is all set to venture out on his own. While Manikandan (Ninaithu Ninaithu Parthen) and Jawahar (Yaardi Nee Mohini) have already established themselves, it now happens to be Rajesh's turn. He has titled his film Pugaipadam and intends to introduce four heroes and three heroines in it.
One of the heroes, Amjad, is associated with Radio One. Of the three leading ladies Priya Anand is an NRI from Canada. When issues of contemporary social relevance form the background of a story there is a general feeling that it will not be a regular entertainer. This feeling is right to a large extent- movies that explore social themes are not full-fledged commercials, like Ammuvaghiya Naan. Then there are movies that try to deal with a social issue but get so carried away by the commercial demands that the movie ceases to honestly look at the issue and becomes just another movie, like Rameshwaram. Then there are movies that are neither here nor there, where an issue is depicted but not dealt with, the commercial angle is included but not given enough time to entertain the audience- Kathavarayan falls under this genre.

The movie deals with illicit liquor (hooch, arrack or sarayam), not a theme that the urban audiences may be able to connect with. Karan plays a hooch distiller who has a completely different way of brewing. He uses herbs, natural extracts and manufactures hooch that is not harmful, or not as harmful as the ones made by using batteries and an assortment of other toxic substances (no wonder hooch tragedies kill so many every year). Karan’s business booms while that of the traditional brewers’ falls drastically. Through this Karan, even though unwittingly, makes a lot of enemies. Meanwhile, there is a socially active young girl (Vidisha) from the city who comes to this place and sees the big hooch racket that is on here. She meets Karan and is determined to stop him from carrying on with this illegal activity, but Karan is not easily convinced with what she says. A disappointed but determined Vidisha gets Karan into serious trouble. The rest of the story shows Karan in the city, trying to meet and settle scores with Vidisha, but then ends up rescuing her from some grave problems that she has got herself into due to her reactive personality

As a movie, Kathavarayan is hard to categorize. As said earlier, it is neither here nor there, but each portion of the movie has been taken fairly well. The movie has a very pertinent message about illicit liquor and its harms that are shown in such a descriptive way that would even do a government documentary proud. The scene where Vidisha conducts a stage play in the village to educate people about the harmful effects of hooch using a cocktail of classic superhit Tamil songs from films like Olivilakku, Vasanthya Maligai and Padaiyappa is enjoyable.

Karan does a pretty neat job as the brewer and vendor of the special liquor, the only weak link being the rural slang that does not suit him. Vitthisha too passes muster. There is also Radha (Sundara Travels fame) who provides all the glamour required for a
movie. The laughs provided by Vadivelu who keeps appearing in little doses throughout the movie is another positive and there are others like Ilavarasu and Muthukalai who do not create much of an impact. Kadhal Dandapaani does another stereotypical, loud mouthing baddie, nothing unexpected here.

On the technical front, there is nothing much to mention. A couple of songs have been shot in Malaysia which are easy on the eye without being spectacular, a better score by Srikanth Deva would have helped matters here.

Also involved are Kamal Hassan, Aamir Khan, Simran, and Prakash Raj. It’s called Hero Va Zero Va, and it’s a documentary produced by the Agaram Foundation which is
managed by Sivakumar, Surya and Jyothika. The film looks at the issue of child labour and children dropping out of school. Based on a report/document researched and prepared by the Agaram Foundation (with CM Karunanidhi and Education Minister Thangam Thenarasu motivating them), the film shows Surya, Madhavan, Jyothika and Vijay each taking a child to school. Each of these children had to overcome various hurdles (ignorance of parents, lack of motivation, the prejudice of educating the girl child, etc) and they do so with these four stars motivating them to get an education.In a function today, Surya screened the film and spoke a little more about it. A promotional video for the documentary that had been shot earlier involved Kamal, Aamir, Simran, Vijay and Prakash Raj speaking. The day Aamir was to do his bit in the video, he had that accident and the production team was messaging him to say they would shoot it later, but Aamir was already messaging them to say he had already shot himself speaking for the promo video and was sending it on Beta to them. Surya thanked Vijay profusely for giving his time. Vijay as a rule, noted Surya, never goes out on Sundays, especially after 4 pm. Surya had asked him for one Sunday morning, but the shoot involved two Sundays, and it went beyond six p.m. But, said Surya, Vijay never made a fuss. Director Dharani's earlier project Ghilli with Vijay and Trisha was a blockbuster victory that had set some kind of fast paced mood, tempo and expectations about this duo in the minds of their fans. They entered the theatre this evening eagerly to catch this maiden production venture of Udhaynidhi Stalin's Red Giants Movies - produced Kuruvi. The secrecy shrouding the story of the film had also helped in escalating its anticipations to a barometric high.
Scaling high-rise buildings, bowing down to bullets elegantly, Kuruvi opens with Vijay in his best nonchalant style, sending his fans into raptures. If the same care and hard work that had gone into rendering a weighty build up for Vijay had also been employed in the story department, it would have been a Ghilli-like encore for this team. As it happens, Kuruvi flies short of Ghilli. Vijay having to free his father and his colleagues who have been trapped as slaves under villains Ashish Vidyarthi and Suman forms the crux of Kuruvi. The director has attempted to ride on the twin horses of action and comedy, moving the film at a very rapid pace, while simultaneously depicting Vijay at his humorous best. However, his objective seems to be too elusive and the film sags at various levels. Ashish Vidyarthi and Suman (Sivaji fame) are compatriots in the quarry business who have given out a contract to Vijay's dad,

Manivannan, in Cudappa, Andhra Pradesh. Diamonds that are otherwise only found in Africa are said to be located in this area, but the government issues a ban to excavate the place owing to the risk of earthquakes. But the baddies force Manivannan to go against the law and make him and his group bonded laborers. Manivannan challenges the villains that his son would avenge him once he learns of this. But Vijay, who is in Chennai, thinks that his dad has gone under cover due to debts and is hopeful of his return one day. Meanwhile, a cheque for 50 lakhs that Manivannan had issued as collateral towards the house, bounces-forcing Vijay to vacate their house. Vijay asks the landlords a week's time to pay back the money and sets out on a mission to Malaysia to find the person whose signature is on the cheque.
He travels to Malaysia as a kuruvi- one who is used as a runner to carry and bring back goods. There he runs into Suman's residence. A scuffle with him results in Vijay stealing Suman's diamond in a Zorro-like costume which leaves Trisha,-Suman's sister, in a mesmerizing trance. She promptly falls in love. Along with her brother, she lands in Chennai in search of Vijay. Each of them search, but with different objectives. How the lead stars reach their respective goals forms the rest of the story.Producer Udhaynidhi has spent generously which is perceptible in the lavish sets, colorful junior artists, graphics etc. Dharani's favorite music composer Vidyasagar's tunes are already a hit and the melodious 'then then' number is a revelation, both visually and acoustically. Trisha is at her glamorous best. Ashish Vidyarthi and Suman
do not have meaty enough roles to prove their mettle. Camera work and editing is slick. Vivek, who accompanies Vijay, provides occasional comic relief. If you go to see Kuruvi with lowered expectations, you may end up liking it. But those who are looking for big build-up sequences and large Ghilli-like payoffs - stay away.

Nepali, the name itself suggests that something different is on offer. But everything that is different need not always be interesting. In a way, Nepali has nothing new in terms of its basic plot. It’s the same boy meets girl, love at first sight, marriage, tragedy and revenge plot, but the script takes a slightly offbeat route

Nepali is the story of a young man, Bharath, who does odd jobs in many places during the day but assumes a dangerously sadistic persona at times. It is as if he knows things that few others know, doing things for reasons that only he knows. His hands hold steady as he sends people to their death, often in the most grueling ways. The law is behind him. But one thing puzzles us: why is he dressed in such a peculiar manner- those pointed brows and small eyes. Is he from Nepal?

Nepali is also the story of another young man, played by Bharath again, who has to face bitter experiences that change him forever. To start with, Bharath is shown as a software engineer, young and happy and in love with a girl in Ooty, Meera Jasmine. Facing opposition from her family, the lovers have no option but to elope and marry. It is a happy and contented life in a world of their own –and it couldn’t get better. But the evil shadow of a police officer who has developed a desire for Meera Jasmine lurks over them. Desire becomes obsession and tragedy follows close behind.

Nepali tells the story of one other young man- Bharath again! who ends up in jail for a crime that he could not avoid committing. In jail he meets a man who holds many secrets that could knock down many big names in the city. In the dark shadows of the gallows, the secrets change hands while no one notices. The hunted man with secrets does not survive but leaves his unfinished tasks in the hands of the young man he met.

This is basically what Nepali is all about. You might be a bit confused, and that’s exactly how the script is - confusing. You might also think that there are many layers to the story but it is actually a simple linear story that has been convoluted back and forth to produce a movie that falls just short of being interesting. The film is set in three time periods and the script moves back and forth between then and now. This kind of narration can be interesting, but the talented director, V.Z. Dhorai (remember the excellent Mugavari?), somehow misfires. This see-sawing narrative movement only makes the movie lose momentum far too many times, always moving in fits and starts, never settling into a steady pace

The cast, except for Bharath, do not have a great deal to do. Bharath, in perhaps the most challenging role of his career, has done well. However, we have to remark that there was more potential in the role, and the director should have got more out of the star. Meera Jasmine’s role isn’t challenging: she walks through it with ease. Govind Namdev, as the old man in jail, has done a neat job. The rest of the cast consist of Charan Raj, Dhandapani, Raja Ravinder and Goutham who have all done fairly well with the limited roles they play

Music by Srikanth Deva is a definite plus point, especially with the ‘Hey You’ being really lively. The script also flirts briefly with comedy with Mayilsaamy and company, trying to raise a few laughs. The Bharath-Meera romance is a low point in the movie: it never seems to work. It is not endearing, except in one song. Technically, the movie deserves praise for Mathi’s camera and Madan Gunadeva’s editing. The movie does seem a bit lengthy-around 3 hours

Overall, Nepali is a product that started off with a good idea but slipped down because of a script that failed to maintain flow and execution that took the zing out of the plot. Certain scenes seem to go on forever. Nepali is not bad, not exactly mediocre either - it just fails to give us a really interesting three hours. During the film’s climax, Bharath runs into a subway followed by policemen; gunshots are heard and then…… you’re in for a surprise!

Santosh Subramaniam is one such movie, it is war between love and family, what to choose when faced with a choice and who will compromise, or would there be a mutual understanding - it’s a debate that’s been on for generations and will go on for all that to follow.
Santosh (Jeyam Ravi) is a lucky boy born with a silver spoon in his mouth, his life lacks nothing. He has wonderful caring parents (Prakash Raj and Geetha) and loving siblings around him, life is great when someone looks at it from outside. But within Jeyam Ravi is frustrated soul and he pours his heart out to Anu Haasan (in a special appearance) which is where the movie begins and ends! Why is he frustrated? Well, that’s what the movie is all about.

Santosh is not a rebel but he wants to meet a girl who he loves and who will in turn love him and he is very particular about it, no matter what. That’s when he comes across Hasini (Genelia), a bubbly, vivacious, ever smiling, innocent girl who seems to have friends everywhere. In a way, she is the type of girl Santosh has never met before and needless to say he is smitten. He is not very good with girls and has to try a few things before becoming a good friend of hers. He is not in two minds, he knows very well that he loves her but something is stopping him from telling her the truth in spite of being pretty confident that she can’t say a ‘No’ to him. But love cannot be hidden or stowed away, it comes

out. But families being families and fathers being fathers, love is not easily accepted. Of course, Prakash Raj has a very strong reason for doing so. However his son’s insistence pushes him to think it over. Prakash Raj agrees to reconsider but the decision has been already made in his mind. The sequence of events that follow are very novel, unique and interesting. That both Santosh and Hasini are from very different backgrounds threatens to stand in the way of their relationship and it very nearly does break them apart. But love is not easily undone and the ending (as in all good love stories) is their union.

What Santosh Subramaniam has in addition to the routine love story is the father-son relationship. It might not be wrong to say that their relationship enjoys more focus in the movie, especially in the second half. Their bond is a complex one, with each one thinking in the best interests of the other but ending up hurting each other. It is in the final portions that Ravi opens his mind and tells Prakash Raj about what is in his heart. The climax is not only about the success of the love story but also about how all members of a family now fully understand each other.As a movie, Santosh Subramaniam is a well made clean family entertainer. Being the remake of a Telugu superhit Bommarillu, the movie always had expectations but one must not burden the movie with any preconceived notions.

Santosh Subramaniam talks about how love has the power to endear as well as suffocate and that suffocation can turn into rebellion if not resolved. It tells us that the only way to make a person understand is by talking to him/her. If we love someone we must tell them what we like or hate about them. Love is about being honest and love is not only the feelings shared by a boy and a girl, it could be between a parent and a child, between two brothers, between friends, anyone.

Ravi as Santosh has done well, especially in scenes where he cuts loose and lets pent up feelings and thoughts blow out. Genelia has no trouble being the bubbly young girl, but her innocence and antics sometimes look like immature childish pranks. Santhanam, Premji and Sreenath as Ravi’s friends light up a few scenes with their comic acts, they come and go at many points without being there for too long. Sadagopan Ramesh, debuting on the big screen as Ravi’s elder brother doesn’t have much to do. Sathyan as the house servant has some scope for comedy and makes use of it adequately. Sayaji Shinde as Genelia’s father does a role that really does not sit well on him, the casting could have been better. But the real master is (though it may sound repetitive) is Prakash Raj, he proves his class yet again.

Overall, Santosh Subramaniam is a movie that you will enjoy. Yes, the screenplay does drag along a bit, especially a few scenes between Ravi and Genelia could have been trimmed, especially considering that the movie runs for three hours. The ‘Eppadi Irundha’ song has been shot in picturesque locations and is a visual treat. The camera and art too should be appreciated. Watch Santosh Subramaniam for that ‘feel good’ feeling, overlook minor glitches.

You guys going to work?” asks a distressed and unemployed Karunas - accompanied by Dhanush - to a few girls waiting in the bus station. There you have the quintessential Danush plot: a jobless youngman, his love-at-first-sight, a far from considerate and a subject-of-abuse father, and a love embroiled in an inconsiderate relationship. Yaaradi Nee Moghini is smartly packaged with everything inevitable in a Dhanush movie. With subdued emotions that hardly ever go overboard and in your face humor, director A. Jawahar gets everything right. Well, almost Dhanush is a happy go lucky guy desperately in search of a job despite his bare minimum qualifications. One of those job-search episodes makes him catch a glimpse of Nayan who works for a software company. Dhanush falls instantly in love and luck favors him to secure a job in the same company, much to his delight, in Nayan’s team.

While Dhanush nurtures his love for Nayan secretly, she turns a blind eye considering his lack of education and proper upbringing. And when he reveals his feelings, Nayan turns him down, further humiliating his father Raghuvaran, leading to death. Although secretly in love with Dhanush, Nayan, considering her orthodox Brahmin background, decides to be married to Karthick instead. The wedding has already been planned by her parents. However, in the end, she expresses her love to Dhanush the night before the wedding. Now it is for Dhanush to decide whether to accept the love that cost him so dearly or to turn his back and pretend to lead a normal life.

Dhanush has immense scope in a role that is tailor-made for him and he pulls it off with consummate ease. Be it as a distraught jobless youngster or a love struck man craving for the impassive dream girl, the job couldn’t have fit anyone else this well. Nayan dispels her bombshell act and proves that she can more than just that. She breaks into tears when needed, shows vicious contempt when rubbed the wrong way in the name of love, and looks endearing in songs.

Raghuvaran’s performance deserves a standing ovation and is a proof of how magnificent an actor he was. Ironically, there are scenes in the movie that has Dhanush perform Raghu’s last rituals that will reduce a viewer to tears.

The humor goes with the flow, and scenes like the whole family of a dozen’s trip to the textile shop in a single vehicle is sure to bring the house down. Karunas establishes that Dhanush brings the best out of him yet again. Remember Polladhavan? However, it is hard not to frown, and often sneer, at the dialogue since it has B & C center audience written all over it.

Director Jawahar has neatly packaged the movie with less melodrama that is surprisingly tad unusual for a movie that focuses on a love story of a girl hailing from an orthodox family. Yuvan’s rerecording breathes life into the movie. So do the songs. Three of them linger long after you have left the theatre. Special mention must be made of the item number performed by a desi Shakira in the train that averts folks from sneaking out of the halls for a smoke. Kudos to the cinematographer who has captured Australia’s vibrant landscape breathtakingly. Bhaskar’s editing helps keep up the pace of the movie.

If you do not mind the usage of crude language, especially between a father and a son, and the dialogues in general that seem a little bent towards a B and C center audience, you are in for a total treat in the Dhanush brand style.

He plays the role of a production manager in the movie and considers the opportunity to be a case of his ‘dreams come true’. Santhanam recounts his first day shoot with the Superstar like yesterday and mentions it to be the first time he saw Rajini in close quarters.

Dumbfound, I went to him and asked his permission to be photographed with him,” he states. The superstar, however, remarked as a matter of fact that they both were stars but did not turn down the wish. “I told him he was incomparable and no other star can come closer,” he adds.

The great villain of Tamil cinema over a decade had expired. Its a great shock to Tamil cinema industry.

It is a great loss for Tamil cinema (indeed for South Indian cinema) to lose Raghuvaran suddenly like this. This versatile, understated, elegant actor had been struggling with a few health issues, but nobody thought (or knew) how serous it was. The news that is just coming in is that he was suddenly hospitalized on Tuesday night. The cause of his death is still unknown.

He was born on December 11, 1948. He debuted in the award winning film, Ezhavathu Manithan (1982), which dealt with the disillusionment of an engineering student with the corrupt wokring practises of industries. He began as a character actor, then played a hero in a few films, went on to be typecast for a very long time as a smooth villain, and then, more recently, as a character actor playing a brother, an uncle, a senior official, a father and a fellow colleague.

RAGUVARAN was outstanding as the sleek politician villain in Shankar’s Mudhalvan. Memorable as Ajith’s supportive elder brother in Mugavari, as Srikanth’s strict father in Roja Kootam, Vijay’s jolly father in Love Today, as Maddy’s cool brother in law in Run, Tabu’s brilliant boss in Kandukondain, Kandukondain, the husband with a secret in Anjali, Vijay’s caring neighbour in Thirumalai, an unconventional teacher in Sivappathigaram, an uncorrupt, ethical civil servant in Marudhamalai, the kind doctor who saves Rajini’s life in Sivaji, the Boss, the not so impressive villain in Bheema and a psychiatrist in Silla Nerangalil - which would become his last released film

When speculations are rife about Ajith starring in the remake of the yesteryear thriller classic Pudhiya Paravai produced by Sivaji films, Prabhu opened up to our correspondent on all that and much more recently. “We have plans for the remake and to associate with Ajith, however, both will be different projects”, Prabhu was quick to clarify.
It is important to note that earlier, rumors suggested Prabhu will don the legendary M.R Radha’s role in the remake with Ajith playing Sivaji’s part.“We are holding talks with Ajith for a new venture and you can expect an official announcement in this regard soon”, Prabhu assures after clarifying that the remake of Pudhiya Paravai is also on the cards for Sivaji films. “We are still in the initial stages of the project and I’m playing the role immortalized by legend M.R. Very much on the same lines of Imsai Arasan, Vadivelu has belted out his second venture in the fantasy-comedy series. If Imsai Arasan worked, it was for its genuine, no-nonsense, spontaneous humor set in a unique milieu. Not to mention, the script was taut and extremely appealing. In the same breadth, Indiralogathil Na. Azhagappan has an engaging script, but what seems to be missing from this fantasy-comedy is the sparkling humor that made the earlier one click.
The movie would have worked but for the contrived and stale comic sequences that makes one wonder if, instead of coming up with a cohesive comic script, they just cobbled together an ensemble of comedy tracks.Vadivelu’s intro, with a song, is definitely on par with the biggies in the film industry, reiterating the golden rule of an opening song for the protagonist. Vadivelu’s fans will be delighted to see him don the lead role on-screen once again. The actor has done a commendable job in all the three roles, as Azhagappan, Indiran and Yamadharman. Of the three, the Indiran role seems to suit him best
The story is plain and simple. The three beauties of Indiralogam – Rambai, Oorvasi and Menaka – come down to earth on a visit. Enchanted by Vadivelu’s drama, Rambai is unable to return to her abode within the stipulated time. As a result, she is cursed and turned into a stone sculpture. Meanwhile, Vadivelu is advised by an astrologer to garland the sculpture. Promptly, he garlands her sculpture and Rambai returns to her original self. She also takes Azhagappan along with her to Indiralogam. His visit to Indiralogam empowers him to predict the past and future of the earthlings. Because of his newfound powers of prediction, the crime rate in the human world declines and there is little work to do in the Yamalogam. Confused, Yamadharman confers the responsibility of investigating this mysterious turn of events to Lord Naradar (enacted by Nasser), who reveals the true cause. Angered by this, Vadivelu is cursed and turns into a 90-year old man.
Given the fact that Vadivelu’s huge chunk of fan population comprises of kids, the director could have avoided the top angles that conveniently feast on the bevy of beauties that encircle Vadivelu. Though Shriya looks good in her small role, the idea of having her play the necromancer doesn’t quite create the desired impact. Vandanam Vanakkam song by Vadivelu and company is quite natural. Thotta Tharani has done an admirable job with the sets, especially the Yamalogam.J. N. Jawahar’s editing is adequate, while Sabesh-Murali’s music with its tinge of 23-aam Pulikesi, is very mediocre. Costumer R. Murugan deserves a special mention, but for Vadivelu’s 90-year old act that deserved a little more attention.Indiralogathil might appeal to those who swear more by Vadivelu’s slapstick antics than his verbal wisecracks. Because there are hardly any verbal fireworks, and those few that are there, are submerged in the extravagance.
Verdict: A riot sans laughter!

Director Kanagu, erstwhile assistant director to Linguswamy, debuts with Pidichirukku for producer Senbagakumar. Incidentally, Kanagu assisted Lingusamy during the making of the much-delayed Bheema that is now making it to the theaters alongside Pidichirukku. The movie stars Ashok as the hero (in his second film, after the average grosser Muruga) and debutant Visaka as the heroine.
It’s a plot we are all familiar with: boy from a humble background falls in love with a rich girl, and the travails their love takes them through. Kanagu keeps this clichéd plot engaging by the fine little details he works into the script. The story begins with Ashok meeting with an accident when Visaka’s duppatta flies away and falls on him. Ashok happened to be traveling behind her in a bike. He owns a goods transport agency and this accident turns things topsy-turvy. Visaka’s sympathy for him predictably turns to love (in a by-the-numbers manner we’ve become accustomed to) and the ever so reluctant Ashok returns her love. But all the newfound happiness blossoming between the two is short lived when the girl’s father discovers their secret. A desperate attempt by Ashok to win her back leads to chaos. To get Visaka away from Ashok, her father takes voluntary transfer and the family leaves for Pune. By the time Ashok finds out, she is gone, leaving him shell shocked.
His long search for his love, and his toils to find her with the help of his friend (played by Kanja Karuppu) forms the rest of the story. All this leads to a pretty interesting but not entirely unpredictable climax.The events that lead up to the conflict in the screenplay seem well composed and without glitches (barring the aurally intolerable comedy by Ganja Karuppu). The second half is when the screenplay becomes a paradox, contradicting the hypothesis that it so far held and even banked upon. Only Ashok’s struggles to find Visaka are portrayed in detail, while her own pain at being separated is hardly depicted, making the audience second guess if their love is for real or is just one sided. (The script doesn’t make any attempt to explain it at the end either). An over-emphasis on the hero’s quest (while in Pune) for the heroine makes the second half a little disengaging, blotting an otherwise smooth narrative.
Ashok’s performance in the romantic scenes (especially when he is on the verge of losing hope of finding his beloved) shows consummate ease. A promising future lies ahead for this young actor. As for Visaka, there isn’t much to write home about except to note that she breathes life into the romantic scenes. Saranya as the heroine’s mother gives a standout performance, while Kanja Karuppu’s humor isn’t funny and is everything short of aural torture. He needs better writers to pen situations and lines that suit him. Sampath Raj who plays the girl’s father, an ex-service man turned customs officer, brings depth to his character. Though music by Manu Rameshan seems to be in tune with the movie, only two songs really make the cut.

Verdict: A love story purely for young lovers dying to see themselves in love stories about separation and longing.

There are only a handful of Tamil movies that deal with family values and even fewer that look at what happens to neglected and lonely parents after their children have married and moved away. It is this rare theme that director Seeman explores in Vazhthukal, which stars, among others, Madhavan, Bhavana, Venkat Prabhu and Vijayalakshmi.

The story begins with people searching for Madhavan, who is shown sitting in a train with his parents in a rather somber state. Cut to a flashback: Maddy is the CEO of Amma, a software company that supports several social causes. He is disillusioned about marriage after he sees the parents of his close friends seeking asylum in an old age home run by Amma. Their son deserts them when his selfish, hardhearted wife demands that they go to an old age home. Maddy's father lets him look for a bride himself. He is attracted to Bhavana, whom he spots in a TV programme that showcases young achievers. Her opinion on family values floors him completely. She even sings praises about her huge joint family with a host of brothers and their wives. Along with his friend and colleague, Venkat Prabhu, Maddy sets off to Bhavana’s college, hoping to woo her.

He runs through a variety of his usual romantic antics to make her fall for him. Maddy finally pounces on an opportunity that falls into his lap: to renovate her family house with the help of a leading interior designer. This way, he finally wins a place in her heart. This is when the movie reveals that this huge family headed by Bhavana’s grandfather is opposed to love marriages. How Maddy finds a place in the hearts of every family member and changes their mind about love forms the rest of the story.The plot unfolds in the most clichéd manner possible with all the characters seeming wax-like. The family seem flawless, the kind of people you don’t see in the real world but always see in the films of Vikraman. The idea of Maddy doing up the house’s interiors with tips from the interior designer seems amateurish, and the result isn't aesthetically pleasing either. For a movie with two major stars, Vazhthukal is also technically mediocre. The camera work is rather plain, and the songs only slow down an already sluggish narrative. Director Seeman seems to suggest that films are just a medium to express your opinions on society and its values.

The result, the movie pans out into a medium of propaganda rather than a visually rich, soulful narrative. Though the intention is good, his attempt to have no English words in the dialogues seems too contrived. The first half of the story is wasted in an elaborate introduction of all the characters and the plot reaches a (so-called) stage of conflict only well into the second half.Madhavan’s lively performance, though, is what keeps the film at least a little engaging. And his chemistry with Bhavana is the other saving grace in this listless movie. But even this is marred by Seeman's self-conscious poetic one-liners that make the romantic scenes appear more funny than sensual. Vijyalakshmi as the interior designer lends credibility to her character, while Venkat Prabhu's humor doesn't work at all. Yuvan's background score isn't too bad but it can't lift the movie from its tedium. Vazhthukal might have worked better in the 90s, when family movies were better appreciated.

Verdict: Sluggish and outdated and same as Vijay's Kathalukku mariyathai.

First things first. You wouldn’t expect a classic tale of movie making from a director – Tarun Gopi – whose previous credential include a hardcore commercial potboiler, Thimiru. Having said that, we did expect a racy entertainer with Simbhu’s return after a brief sabbatical creating enough and more hype. However, Kaalai, Tarun Gopi’s second venture and first with Simbhu is a classic case of too much in too little time. With too little scenes that substantiate the sense of logic, Tarun Gopi has royally squandered an opportunity.

Less said the better about the story. Simbhu shares his name with two other people - one villain and one cop-turned-baddie and the situations arising out of it promise enough curiosity for a while as soon as the movie opens. However, it eventually fizzles out when the movie takes a turn for better or for worse.

Seema – Simbhu’s grandmother – slays five men, mind you when she was only ten, since they flouted her father’s advices and distilled alcohol illegally in the village also involving in other shady activities. The villagers, for her noble act, consider her their head after her return from the prison and are peaceful under her reign. However, trouble crops up in the name of a police officer – Lal – whose ego is hurt when challenged by the fellow policeman’s son that he can’t find anything illicit in Simbhu’s village, ruled by the godmother Seema.

Lal tries - but to no avail - to nail somebody from the village for any charges and ends being thrashed up the villagers. Predictably, he returns back with a vengeance and in the dirty war, burns Seema alive. Enough reason for Simbhu to seek retribution for his loss. Simbhu returns to Chennai, uses the tried and tested formula to woo Lal’s daughter Vedhika, and after a couple of duets abducts her as a hostage on revenge of his grandmom’s death.With a script that has more holes than a fish net, it’s evident that Simbhu could just not help the ship from sinking. However, his mind-boggling stunt scenes and the dance sequences especially for songs ‘Kutti Pisaase’ and ‘Kaalai Kaalai’ are stupendously performed. Particularly, Kutti Pisaase might send his fans on a nostalgic trip to the good old days when Simbhu sang and danced ‘I am a little star’.Vedika’s character is left to deal with a few duets in measly outfits in exotic locales with an almost innocent face. Alas, she vanishes from the movie abruptly even before its end. Santhanam – Simbhu duo’s comic act has lesser than desired results.

Veteran Seema’s grandmother-godmother act refuses to fade after she is brutally charred alive in the movie. Sangeetha plays Simbhu’s aunt and yes, her role is of utmost importance. If you must insist, here is how. It’s only when she gets spanked by Lal that violence erupts uncontrollably in the village. Lal’s villainy seems to be born with him and he is prominent with his viciousness in the movie that is also swarmed with many other such likes. R.D.Rajasekar’s camera brings in unsullied frames of fresh locales during the duet scenes. G.V. Prakash stands out in two songs and scores an average for background music.

Had Tarun Gopi worked on the script for a taut screenplay coupled with some interesting twists, Simbhu’s Kaalai would definitely have been a joy ride. Verdict: Action - nothing more, nothing less

Kamal Haasan, brand ambassador for Project “Hridaya Ragam – 2008”, surprised everyone present at a charity function held this evening at Greenpark Hotel, Chennai, when he agreed to talk a little bit about Dasavatharam. WMC (World Malayalee Council) Chennai Province will be conducting free paediatric heart surgeries under the Project “Hridaya Ragam – 2008”. Along with
Kamal, present at the event were donors and others concerned with the project. The project’s aim is to raise money for a 100 free heart surgeries for poor children. Malayalam Manorama said that they would like to raise funds for another 25 free paediatric heart surgeries.As the evening drew to a close, people began to ask Kamal about Dasavatharam, Kamal replied with amusement that everywhere he went he was unfailingly asked about the movie, and his answer has always remained the same: that he can’t reveal anything yet. But this evening all that changes, he said suddenly, surprising everyone there. The film will be released in April, he added, and the audio in March. He went on to praise the work of young music composer Himesh Reshammiya. Here is a North Indian, pointed out Kamal, who has composed music that beautifully and perfectly evokes all that is South Indian. Especially period music and songs that evoke 12th century South India.Someone else asked him about a proposed project with Walt Disney. The story is said to be woven around Pasupathy and Rajinikanth and the Tamil version will be suitably altered to cater to the audience here especially Rajini fans.

For the role of leading ladies, many names are being discussed. Simran and Tabu are reported to be accompanying Pasupathy and Rajinikanth respectively. And this time around it is not one but two projects in a row. The first project, awaiting official confirmation, is a short one for his mentor K. Balachander's Kavithalaya Productions, which is to be directed by P. Vasu.

It will be a remake of the Malayalam film Katha Parayumbol directed by Mohanan starring Mammooty, Sreenivas and Meena, which released all over Kerala last Christmas and is running to packed houses and was also critically well received.In Katha Parayumbol, Mammooty played the role of a superstar and appeared only in a few scenes but it was a very significant role. In the Tamil version, however, sources indicate director P. Vasu has considerably increased the length of Rajini’s role so as to please his fans but it will still only occupy a minor part in the film, significant nevertheless. He has even adapted the story to suit the Tamil audiences they say. Actor Pasupathy will play the role essayed by Sreenivas in the original. You have heard of planes crashing due to bird hit, but this time it's about a bird in a chopper. This one is for Vijay's film Kuruvi. Incidentally, this film's shooting was on in Malaysia for a long time and the crew had only recently returned to Chennai. A stunt scene was picturised with Vijay taking on few men who belong to the African mafia in a huge bar-cum-disco set erected for this purpose.

Kuruvi's crew is following another trend that was started off again by Rajini's Sivaji, where the superstar uses a chopper to travel to a village and even in the climax. Chopper was also used to shoot a tsunami sequence in Kamal Haasan's Dasavatharam. Aerial shots using choppers are not new to Tamil cinema, just that it is now being used for more relevant scenes than only a few shots in a song. In Kuruvi, the director has used a chopper to shoot an entire song sequence to give it a feel of grandeur. Directors are now willing to go any lengths to experiment even in the technical department.
